This therapeutic regimen, developed by The Third Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, combines the chemotherapeutic agents albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-paclitaxel) and temozolomide with a non-pharmacological intervention known as Specific Mode Electroacupuncture Stimulation (SMES). Albumin-bound paclitaxel is a nanoparticle formulation of paclitaxel that inhibits cell division by stabilizing microtubules, while temozolomide is an alkylating agent that induces DNA damage. The primary challenge in treating high-grade gliomas with paclitaxel is its inability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) due to its high molecular weight. SMES is utilized in this protocol to transiently open the BBB, thereby enhancing the penetration and concentration of albumin-bound paclitaxel within the tumor and surrounding invasive tissues. This integrative approach aims to improve survival outcomes and quality of life for patients with recurrent high-grade gliomas.
