Albumin-coated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-Alb) are an experimental nanotherapeutic formulation consisting of a silver nanoparticle core encapsulated within an albumin protein shell. This coating is designed to enhance the biocompatibility and stability of the silver core while potentially leveraging albumin-mediated transport pathways (such as gp60-mediated transcytosis) to improve tumor-specific delivery. Preclinical research indicates that AgNPs-Alb exert potent anticancer effects by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting tumor cell migration and proliferation. The mechanism of action involves the modulation of key apoptotic regulators, including the upregulation of P53 and the Bax/Bcl2 ratio, alongside the suppression of angiogenic factors like VEGF-A and VEGF-C. Additionally, the formulation has been shown to inhibit epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) by downregulating Snail and upregulating E-cadherin, making it a candidate for further investigation in solid tumors such as prostate cancer.
