Albumin human is a sterile, aqueous solution of albumin derived from pooled human plasma, used primarily as a plasma volume expander. It works by increasing the oncotic pressure within the intravascular space, which draws fluid from the interstitial tissues into the circulation, thereby improving hemodynamics in states of shock. Beyond its volume-expanding properties, human albumin possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and transport functions, binding various endogenous and exogenous substances. In clinical research led by the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in India, human albumin (in 5% and 20% concentrations) is being evaluated for fluid resuscitation in patients with cirrhosis and sepsis-induced hypotension (septic shock), specifically comparing its efficacy and safety against crystalloids like Plasmalyte and normal saline.
