Albumin human + crystalloid refers to the combined or sequential administration of human albumin solutions and crystalloid fluids (such as 0.9% sodium chloride or Lactated Ringer's) for volume resuscitation and hemodynamic support. Albumin, a natural colloid derived from human plasma, provides significant oncotic pressure that helps retain fluid within the intravascular compartment, thereby maintaining blood pressure and organ perfusion. Crystalloids are aqueous solutions of mineral salts or other water-soluble molecules that provide immediate fluid resuscitation and maintain extracellular fluid balance. This therapeutic strategy is a cornerstone in the management of critically ill patients, particularly those with severe sepsis, septic shock, or cirrhosis with complications such as spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. Large-scale clinical trials, including the ALBIOS (Albumin Italian Outcome Sepsis) trial and the SAFE (Saline versus Albumin Fluid Evaluation) trial, have investigated the efficacy of adding albumin to standard crystalloid therapy to improve clinical outcomes in these populations.
