Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination therapy consisting of three active pharmaceutical ingredients: - **Albuterol** (also known as salbutamol): a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist (SABA) that acts as a bronchodilator by relaxing smooth muscle in the airways, leading to improved airflow. - **Ipratropium**: a short-acting muscarinic antagonist (SAMA), also known as an anticholinergic, which inhibits muscarinic receptors in the bronchial smooth muscle, resulting in bronchodilation. - **Prednisone**: a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. It reduces airway inflammation and immune response. This triple combination is used primarily for acute exacerbations of respiratory diseases such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), especially when rapid improvement in airflow and reduction of airway inflammation are required. The combination leverages complementary mechanisms—bronchodilation from albuterol and ipratropium, plus anti-inflammatory effects from prednisone—to improve symptoms more effectively than monotherapy or dual therapy alone[6][7]. While fixed-dose combinations exist for albuterol + ipratropium (e.g., Combivent Respimat), there is no single commercial product containing all three agents; they are typically administered together during acute management protocols.
