Overview

Albuterol + levalbuterol is a hypothetical combination of two short-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonists used as bronchodilators. Both drugs act by selectively stimulating beta-2 adrenergic receptors on airway smooth muscle, leading to increased cyclic AMP and subsequent relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle. This results in bronchodilation and relief from symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness associated with reversible obstructive airway diseases like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Albuterol is typically administered as a racemic mixture containing both (R)-albuterol (levalbuterol) and (S)-albuterol, while levalbuterol is the purified (R)-enantiomer considered to be the therapeutically active component[3][5][6]. There are no known marketed products or clinical guidelines recommending the combined use of both albuterol and levalbuterol together in a single formulation.
