Albuterol sulfate is a small molecule, short-acting beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist that functions as a bronchodilator by relaxing bronchial smooth muscle. In a clinical research study led by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), aerosolized albuterol sulfate was evaluated for the treatment of severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (sBPD) in mechanically ventilated, very preterm infants. The study compared two doses (1.25 mg and 2.5 mg) against a saline placebo to determine safety and efficacy, particularly regarding peak inspiratory pressures and expiratory flow. Although widely used in neonatal intensive care units, albuterol is not currently FDA-approved for use in children under the age of two.
