Overview

albuvirtide is a long-acting HIV-1 fusion inhibitor developed by Frontier Biotechnologies. It is a 3-maleimidopropionic acid-modified peptide that targets the gp41 subunit of the HIV-1 envelope protein. By binding to the N-terminal heptad repeat (NHR) of gp41, it prevents the formation of the six-helix bundle required for the fusion of the viral and host cell membranes. Albuvirtide is designed for once-weekly intravenous administration, providing a long-acting therapeutic option for patients with HIV-1 infection, including those with multi-drug resistance or those who have failed previous antiretroviral therapies. It was the first long-acting HIV drug approved in China.
