Alcohol (ethanol) is a central nervous system depressant that primarily functions as a positive allosteric modulator of GABA-A receptors and an antagonist of NMDA glutamate receptors. In the context of clinical research conducted by Boston University (NCT00183170), alcohol was administered to college students to achieve a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.10-0.12 g%. The study, titled 'Residual Effects of Intoxication on Student Performance,' was a placebo-controlled crossover trial designed to evaluate the next-day 'hangover' effects on academic and cognitive performance. Funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), the research assessed impairments in standardized test scores and neurobehavioral functions once the participants' BAC had returned to zero.
