ALD-101 is an investigational cell therapy consisting of a population of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) isolated from umbilical cord blood based on high expression of the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). Developed by Aldagen (later acquired by Cytomedix and Nuo Therapeutics), ALD-101 is designed as an adjuvant to standard unrelated umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT). The selection of "ALDH-bright" (ALDHbr) cells aims to provide a concentrated population of potent progenitor cells that can accelerate hematopoietic recovery, specifically reducing the time to neutrophil and platelet engraftment, which is a significant clinical challenge in cord blood transplants. It has been primarily evaluated in pediatric patients with inherited metabolic diseases (inborn errors of metabolism) undergoing transplant.
