ALD-401 is an autologous stem cell therapy developed for the treatment of ischemic stroke. The therapy utilizes a proprietary technology to isolate and concentrate a specific population of adult stem cells from the patient's own bone marrow known as ALDH-bright (ALDHbr) cells. These cells are characterized by high levels of the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), which serves as a marker for progenitor cells with potent regenerative, angiogenic, and neuroprotective properties. ALD-401 is administered via intracarotid infusion, typically within two to three weeks following a stroke, to promote tissue repair and functional recovery. Originally developed by Aldagen, the program was acquired by Cytomedix (later Nuo Therapeutics) in 2012 and reached Phase 2 clinical trials before being discontinued in 2014 due to strategic resource reallocation.
