Overview

Aldazide is a combination pharmaceutical drug containing spironolactone and hydroflumethiazide. Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic and an aldosterone antagonist, which works by competitively binding to receptors at the aldosterone-dependent sodium-potassium exchange site in the distal convoluted renal tubule, leading to increased excretion of sodium and water while retaining potassium. Hydroflumethiazide is a thiazide diuretic that inhibits the sodium-chloride symporter (SLC12A3) in the distal convoluted tubule, thereby reducing water reabsorption. The combination provides additive diuretic and antihypertensive effects, with spironolactone mitigating the potassium loss typically associated with thiazide diuretics. It is developed by Pfizer and is indicated for the treatment of hypertension and edematous conditions.
