Aldehyde oxystarch, also referred to as coated aldehyde oxystarch, is a chemically modified starch in which the starch polymer has been oxidized to introduce reactive aldehyde groups. This modification allows the material to interact with specific biomolecules and can be used for targeted therapeutic applications. Coated formulations are designed for controlled release, making them suitable for drug delivery systems or as agents in gastrointestinal dialysis therapies. Aldehyde oxystarch has been investigated primarily as an oral adsorbent intended to bind uremic toxins in the gastrointestinal tract of patients with chronic renal failure (uremia), thereby reducing toxin absorption and alleviating symptoms associated with kidney dysfunction[1][2][9]. The mechanism relies on its ability to adsorb or chemically bind waste products via its reactive aldehyde groups.
