Aldesleukin is a recombinant analog of human interleukin-2 (IL-2), a cytokine that plays a central role in the activation and proliferation of lymphocytes. It is produced by recombinant DNA technology using genetically engineered Escherichia coli containing an analog of the human IL-2 gene[9]. Aldesleukin binds to the interleukin-2 receptor on immune cells, leading to activation and proliferation of T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. This results in enhanced immune-mediated cytotoxicity against tumor cells[5][4]. Aldesleukin is primarily indicated for metastatic renal cell carcinoma and metastatic melanoma[1][7]. Its use can cause severe side effects including capillary leak syndrome, hypotension, organ dysfunction, and neurotoxicity; therefore it must be administered under close medical supervision in hospital settings[1][8].
