Overview

This combination immunotherapy consists of intralesional injections of aldesleukin (recombinant Interleukin-2) and Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), specifically the OncoTICE strain. Aldesleukin is a cytokine that promotes the proliferation and activation of T cells and natural killer (NK) cells, enhancing the body's adaptive immune response. BCG is a live-attenuated strain of *Mycobacterium bovis* that acts as a potent biological response modifier; when injected intralesionally, it induces a localized inflammatory response and recruits immune effector cells to the tumor microenvironment. This specific combination is being investigated by Dr. Carman Giacomantonio for the treatment of cutaneous metastatic melanoma, with the goal of achieving synergistic immune stimulation to induce regression of both injected and potentially non-injected (abscopal) lesions.
