Overview

aldesleukin + extracorporeal photopheresis is an investigational combination therapy being evaluated by the City of Hope Medical Center for the treatment of steroid-refractory chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). Aldesleukin is a recombinant form of interleukin-2 (IL-2) that, when administered at low doses, selectively promotes the expansion and growth of T regulatory (Treg) cells, which are essential for maintaining immune tolerance and controlling the immune system's attack on host tissues. Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) is an immunomodulatory procedure where a patient's blood is treated outside the body with a photosensitizing agent and ultraviolet A light before being returned to the patient. This combination approach aims to synergistically increase the Treg cell population and improve symptoms in patients whose cGVHD has not responded to standard steroid treatments.
