Overview

Aldesleukin + lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells is an investigational combination immunotherapy regimen evaluated by Weill Medical College of Cornell University for the treatment of malignant gliomas. Aldesleukin is a recombinant form of interleukin-2 (IL-2) that acts as a potent T-cell growth factor and activator of natural killer (NK) cells by binding to IL-2 receptors. In this specific therapeutic approach, aldesleukin is administered intracavitary (directly into the tumor cavity) alongside autologous LAK cells—patient-derived lymphocytes that have been activated and expanded ex vivo with IL-2. This localized delivery is intended to bypass the blood-brain barrier and stimulate a targeted immune response against primary, recurrent, or refractory brain tumors by enhancing the cytolytic activity of the infused immune cells within the tumor microenvironment.
