Aldoxystarch is a polymeric adsorbent used primarily in the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and uremia. It is produced by the selective oxidation of starch, resulting in a polymer rich in aldehyde groups. These aldehyde groups chemically react with nitrogenous waste products, such as urea and ammonia, in the gastrointestinal tract to form stable Schiff bases. These compounds are subsequently excreted in the feces, thereby sequestering toxins that would otherwise accumulate in the blood due to impaired renal function. By lowering blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels and alleviating uremic symptoms, aldoxystarch serves as an important adjunct therapy or a bridge to dialysis. It has been notably developed and utilized by institutions such as The People's Hospital of Gaozhou in China.
