Alendronate is a bisphosphonate medication used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men, as well as osteoporosis caused by long-term corticosteroid use. It is also indicated for the treatment of Paget's disease of bone. Alendronate works by inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, thereby decreasing the rate at which bone is broken down and increasing bone mineral density. The drug was first described in 1978 and approved for medical use in the United States in 1995. It is commonly prescribed alongside vitamin D and calcium supplementation[1][2][3][7].
