Alendronate + anastrozole is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used in the management of postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer who are at risk for osteoporosis. Alendronate is a bisphosphonate that inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption, thereby preventing bone loss and increasing bone mineral density. Anastrozole is a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor that reduces estrogen production by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, which converts androgens to estrogens. While anastrozole effectively suppresses tumor growth in hormone-sensitive breast cancer, it increases the risk of osteoporosis and fractures due to estrogen depletion. The addition of alendronate helps mitigate this adverse effect by preserving or improving bone mineral density during aromatase inhibitor therapy[2][5][7].
