Overview

Alendronate sodium + beta-tricalcium phosphate is an experimental combination therapy being evaluated for the treatment of periodontal intra-osseous defects. Alendronate sodium is an aminobisphosphonate that primarily inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption by targeting farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase. In this specific application, 400µg of alendronate sodium is locally delivered using beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) as a bioactive, osteoconductive bone substitute. The combination aims to enhance bone formation and clinical attachment levels in dental patients with periodontal defects. The Panineeya Mahavidyalaya Institute of Dental Sciences & Research Centre conducted a Phase 4 clinical trial in Hyderabad, India, to assess its efficacy compared to β-TCP alone.
