alendronic acid

Aldrobone is a generic formulation of alendronic acid, a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis and other bone-related disorders. Developed and marketed by Obsons Pharmaceuticals, it works by binding to hydroxyapatite crystals in the bone and inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts, the cells responsible for bone resorption. Specifically, it inhibits the enzyme farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase in the mevalonate pathway, leading to osteoclast apoptosis and a subsequent increase in bone mineral density. It is typically administered orally and is indicated for postmenopausal osteoporosis, osteoporosis in men, and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.
