Overview

Alequel is an autologous protein-containing colon extract developed by Enzo Biochem (Enzo Therapeutics) in collaboration with the Hadassah Medical Organization for the treatment of Crohn's disease. The therapy is based on the principle of oral tolerance, where the oral administration of a patient-specific mixture of colonic proteins aims to modulate the immune system's response to gut antigens. By inducing regulatory T cells and suppressing pro-inflammatory effector cells and cytokines like interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), Alequel seeks to alleviate the immune-mediated mucosal damage characteristic of inflammatory bowel disease. Clinical studies have demonstrated that the treatment is well-tolerated and can lead to clinical remission and improved quality of life in patients with moderate to severe Crohn's disease, accompanied by changes in peripheral T cell subsets and reduced antigen-specific immune responses.
