Alfacalcidol is a synthetic analogue of vitamin D used primarily to manage hypocalcemia, secondary hyperparathyroidism, and osteodystrophy in patients with chronic renal failure. It is also indicated for the treatment of various forms of rickets and osteomalacia, including nutritional, malabsorptive, vitamin D-dependent, and hypophosphataemic types. Alfacalcidol works by increasing serum calcium levels through stimulation of intestinal calcium absorption, reabsorption from bone, and possibly renal reabsorption. It also modestly increases intestinal phosphorus absorption and suppresses parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion. These actions help maintain proper calcium balance essential for bone health[1][3][4][5].
