Alfaflor

Alfaflor is an ophthalmic combination drug containing betamethasone (a corticosteroid), naphazoline (a vasoconstrictor), and tetracycline (a broad-spectrum antibiotic). Developed by Alfa Intes, it is approved in Italy as eye drops for the treatment of bacterial and non-bacterial (including allergic) conjunctivitis, dacryocystitis, dacryostenosis, blepharoconjunctivitis, eczematous dermatitis of the eyelids, and other ocular inflammations or infections susceptible to tetracycline. Betamethasone acts as an anti-inflammatory agent by activating the glucocorticoid receptor, naphazoline reduces ocular congestion and redness by stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors to induce vasoconstriction, and tetracycline inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit.
