Overview
Algestone acetophenide is a synthetic progestin, specifically a derivative of 17α-hydroxyprogesterone, used primarily as a long-lasting injectable contraceptive in combination with an estrogen such as estradiol enanthate. It acts as an agonist of the progesterone receptor, leading to suppression of ovulation and changes in the endometrium that make it less suitable for implantation. The drug exhibits high progestogenic potency (2–5 times greater than natural progesterone), with minimal androgenic, estrogenic, or glucocorticoid activity. Its effects can last several weeks after intramuscular injection due to its long elimination half-life (about 24 days). Besides contraception, it has been used topically for anti-inflammatory purposes and in acne treatment[1][2][3][4][5][6].
