Alginate-based reflux suppressants are a class of gastrointestinal medications used to manage symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux, particularly during pregnancy. The mechanism of action is primarily physical; upon contact with gastric acid, the alginate reacts to form a viscous, pH-neutral gel 'raft' that floats on the surface of the stomach contents. This raft acts as a mechanical barrier to prevent the reflux of acidic gastric juice and pepsin into the esophagus. In a clinical trial conducted by Chulalongkorn University (NCT02141399), an alginate-based suppressant was evaluated for its efficacy and safety in pregnant women compared to traditional magnesium-aluminum antacid gels, highlighting its utility as a non-systemic treatment option for gestational heartburn.
