The Alice influenza vaccine is a historical live, attenuated, intranasal vaccine targeting the influenza A (H3N2) virus. Developed in the early 1970s by Smith Kline & French (RIT), it was based on an inhibitor-resistant recombinant strain derived from the A/England/42/72 virus. The vaccine was administered intranasally, typically in two doses two weeks apart, to stimulate both local mucosal (nasal) and systemic (serum) antibody responses. Clinical trials conducted in the mid-1970s demonstrated its safety and immunogenicity in various populations, including healthy adults and individuals with chronic respiratory conditions like asthma, where it was shown to be well-tolerated without adversely affecting pulmonary function. It represents an early effort in the development of cold-adapted or attenuated live influenza vaccines.
