Overview

**Alidornase alfa** is a recombinant deoxyribonuclease I (DNase I) enzyme in development for pulmonary diseases characterized by excessive extracellular DNA contributing to mucus viscosity. Produced using Protalix BioTherapeutics' ProCellEx plant cell expression system, it acts by hydrolyzing extracellular DNA released from degenerating neutrophils during inflammation, thereby reducing sputum viscosity and improving mucociliary clearance without affecting intracellular DNA. Primarily targeted for **cystic fibrosis** to thin mucus and enhance lung function as an adjunct therapy, it has also received FDA Orphan Drug Designation for **sarcoidosis**.[2][3][6][10][12]
