Overview

Alimemazine is a first-generation phenothiazine derivative antihistamine primarily used to relieve allergic skin conditions such as pruritus and urticaria. It is also employed as a sedative for young children before surgical procedures and has antiemetic properties for the prevention of motion sickness. Alimemazine acts mainly by antagonizing the histamine H1 receptor, thereby blocking the effects of endogenous histamine in allergic reactions. Its central nervous system penetration leads to sedative and hypnotic effects. Additionally, it exhibits weak anticholinergic activity and some anti-serotonin effects. Although structurally related to antipsychotic phenothiazines like chlorpromazine, alimemazine is not used clinically as an antipsychotic[1][2][3][6][8].
