Alirocumab + rosuvastatin is a combination of two lipid-lowering agents used to reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in patients at high risk for cardiovascular events. Alirocumab is a fully human IgG1 monoclonal antibody that inhibits proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), thereby increasing the number of LDL receptors available to clear LDL-C from the bloodstream. Rosuvastatin is a synthetic statin that inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis, leading to upregulation of hepatic LDL receptors and increased clearance of circulating LDL-C. The combination provides additive or synergistic effects on lowering LDL-C and reducing cardiovascular risk, especially in patients who require additional lipid lowering beyond what can be achieved with statins alone or who are at very high cardiovascular risk[2][3][5]. Alirocumab was developed by Regeneron and Sanofi; rosuvastatin was developed by AstraZeneca.
