Overview

Aliskiren is a direct renin inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children over 6 years old. It works by selectively inhibiting renin, the first enzyme in the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system (RAAS), thereby preventing the conversion of angiotensinogen to angiotensin I. This leads to reduced production of angiotensin II and aldosterone, resulting in vasodilation, decreased sympathetic activity, increased sodium excretion by the kidneys, and ultimately lower blood pressure. Aliskiren was developed by Speedel and Novartis and was first approved for use in 2007[1][3][4][6].
