Overview

Alisma orientalis, also known as Alisma plantago-aquatica subsp. orientale (Sam.) Sam. or "zexie," is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant. It is a key ingredient in the Alisma orientalis beverage (AOB), a traditional Chinese medicine formulation traditionally used for treating metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis. Research indicates that Alisma orientalis itself possesses antisteatosis effects, including modulation of lipogenesis, antilipoapoptosis, and anti-inflammation, and contributes to lipid-lowering effects. When formulated as AOB, it has been shown to exert antiatherosclerotic effects by regulating gut microbiota, reducing trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) levels, and decreasing hepatic flavin-containing monooxygenase 3 (FMO3) expression.
