Overview

*Alisma plantago-aquatica* extract is a natural product derived from the shoot system of the Water Plantain, an aquatic perennial herb belonging to the Alismataceae family. The extract is rich in bioactive secondary metabolites, including phenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and steroids. Research has demonstrated that the aqueous extract possesses significant antioxidant, antiparasitic, antibacterial, and antineoplastic properties. Its mechanism of action in cancer cells involves the induction of apoptosis through the intrinsic pathway, characterized by increased mitochondrial membrane permeability, cytochrome c release into the cytosol, and subsequent activation of caspases. In bacterial pathogens, it exerts its effects by disrupting cell membrane integrity and causing DNA damage, while also exhibiting the ability to inhibit bacterial biofilm formation. Although it showed lower relative potency compared to other aquatic plants like *Ludwigia stolonifera* in specific studies, it remains a promising candidate for the development of safe and effective natural pharmaceuticals.
