Overview

ALK Alutard 5-grasses is a standardized allergen extract used for subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) in patients with moderate to severe IgE-mediated allergic rhinoconjunctivitis caused by grass pollen. The product contains a mixture of allergenic extracts from five temperate grasses—Timothy (Phleum pratense), Orchard (Dactylis glomerata), June (Poa pratensis), Redtop (Agrostis alba), and Sweet Vernal (Anthoxanthum odoratum)—adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant. The mechanism of action involves gradual up-dosing to increase immune tolerance to the relevant grass pollens, leading to immunomodulation characterized by reduced recruitment of T-lymphocytes and eosinophils, a shift from Th2 to Th1 cytokine production, increased IL-10 synthesis causing T-cell anergy, and decreased histamine release from basophils. This results in suppression of allergic responses upon subsequent exposure to the allergens[6][7][8][10]. Developed for long-term disease-modifying therapy under medical supervision.
