all-rac-α-tocopherol is the fully synthetic form of alpha-tocopherol, a type of vitamin E. It is an antioxidant that protects cell membranes from oxidative damage by neutralizing free radicals. In addition to its antioxidant activity, alpha-tocopherol modulates immune function and influences cell signaling and gene expression. The synthetic all-rac form contains a mixture of eight stereoisomers; only one matches the natural RRR-alpha configuration found in foods. The bioactivity of all-rac-alpha-tocopherol is about half that of natural RRR-alpha-tocopherol on a weight basis[1][9]. It is used primarily as a dietary supplement to prevent or treat vitamin E deficiency and has been studied for potential roles in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease[3][7]. Its mechanism includes inhibition of protein kinase C activity and modulation of enzymes involved in arachidonic acid metabolism[1].
