Overview

Allenrolfea occidentalis pollen extract is a biological allergen used for the diagnosis and treatment of Type I hypersensitivity reactions to iodine bush pollen. Iodine bush is a halophytic shrub common in the arid regions of the Southwestern United States and Mexico. The extract contains a complex mixture of proteins that, when administered in small amounts during skin testing, can identify sensitized individuals by eliciting a wheal-and-flare reaction. In therapeutic settings, the extract is used in allergen-specific immunotherapy (SIT), where increasing doses are administered subcutaneously to induce immunological tolerance. This process involves shifting the immune response from a Th2-mediated allergic profile to a Th1 or regulatory T-cell (Treg) profile, increasing the production of IgG4 blocking antibodies, and reducing the sensitivity of mast cells and basophils to the allergen.
