Overview

Allergen Immunotherapy Extract, also referred to as Proprietary Mixed Allergen (PMA), is a biologic therapy developed by Johns Hopkins University for the management of moderate to severe perennial allergic rhinitis. The therapy consists of a proprietary mixture of FDA-approved allergens administered via subcutaneous injection. It is designed to induce immune tolerance in patients sensitized to multiple aeroallergens, including dust mite species. The treatment protocol typically involves a series of bi-weekly injections with escalating doses over an 8-week period, followed by a safety follow-up. By repeatedly exposing the immune system to specific allergens, the therapy aims to modulate the allergic response, reduce clinical symptoms, and improve the quality of life for patients with chronic rhinitis. It has been evaluated in Phase 2 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials.
