Overview

Allergenic extract of birch is a biologic immunotherapy derived from the pollen of birch trees (Betula species). It is used to treat allergic rhinitis and/or rhinoconjunctivitis, and in some cases mild asthma, caused by pollen from birch and related trees in the Betulaceae family, such as alder and hazel. [3] The active components are birch pollen allergens which desensitize the patient's immune system through repeated exposure. This process aims to reduce the IgE-mediated allergic response that triggers symptoms. [6, 24] Treatment, which typically begins weeks or months before the pollen season, is administered via subcutaneous injection or sublingually as liquid drops or tablets. [1, 22, 26] Various formulations exist, including standardized extracts, non-standardized extracts, and chemically modified extracts (allergoids) designed to reduce allergenicity. [14, 19]
