Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The 'allergenic extract of Dermatophagoides' is a biological allergen extract developed by LOFARMA, an Italian pharmaceutical company specializing in allergy products. The active ingredient is a standardized extract derived from Dermatophagoides house dust mites (most likely Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and/or Dermatophagoides farinae), which are among the most common indoor allergen sources. The drug is a biologic (allergen extract) modality, used in the diagnosis and/or immunotherapy (desensitization) of house dust mite allergy, respiratory allergy, and related conditions such as allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma. Its biological target is the IgE-mediated immune response to house dust mite allergens, particularly major allergen groups such as Der p 1 and Der p 2. LOFARMA conducted a completed Phase 2 clinical trial in Italy to determine the biological activity of this extract — alongside Betulaceae (birch) and Graminaceae (grass pollen) extracts — using histamine equivalent prick (HEP) units, with the goal of defining an in-house reference preparation based on skin prick test (SPT) responses in allergic adults. The extract is used in the context of in vivo biological standardization, a regulatory and scientific process required in Europe to ensure consistency and potency of allergen immunotherapy products.
