Acer saccharum pollen is a non-standardized biological allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the sugar maple tree (Acer saccharum). It is used for both the diagnosis (via skin testing) and treatment (via immunotherapy) of individuals with immediate hypersensitivity (Type I allergy) to this specific pollen. For diagnostic purposes, the extract is applied percutaneously or intradermally to elicit a localized allergic reaction (wheal and flare) in sensitized individuals. For therapeutic use, it is administered subcutaneously in gradually increasing doses. This process, known as allergen immunotherapy, aims to induce immune tolerance by modulating the body's response to the allergen, thereby reducing the severity of allergic symptoms upon natural exposure. It is available as a single-allergen extract and is also a component of multi-tree pollen mixes. Key manufacturers of these extracts include Stallergenes Greer and Nelco Laboratories.
