Overview

Allium fistulosum aqueous extract (AFW) is a natural product extract derived from the Welsh onion (*Allium fistulosum*), a plant traditionally used in East Asian medicine for treating colds, influenza, and cardiovascular issues. It is currently being investigated in preclinical research for its potential therapeutic effects on obesity and metabolic syndrome. The extract contains bioactive polyphenols, including ferulic acid and quercetin. Its primary mechanism of action involves the activation of the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway and the modulation of adiponectin levels, which together help regulate lipid metabolism, reduce body weight, and decrease adipose tissue accumulation. While it shows promise as a functional food ingredient or a therapeutic agent for metabolic disorders, it is not yet a commercially available pharmaceutical drug.
