Overview

Allium fistulosum ethanolic extract (AFE) is a research-stage natural product derived from the Welsh onion (*Allium fistulosum*). It contains bioactive constituents such as quercetin and ferulic acid and has been investigated primarily for its potential in treating metabolic disorders. Preclinical studies in high-fat diet-induced obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) models suggest that AFE exerts anti-obesity and anti-lipogenic effects by down-regulating key lipogenic factors, including sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP-1c), fatty acid synthase (FASN), and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), while also activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). Beyond metabolic health, the extract has shown anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties in animal models. There is currently no evidence of clinical development or commercialization by pharmaceutical companies.
