The extract is characterized by its high content of sulfur-containing compounds, particularly cycloalliin. AHWE is primarily investigated for its potential therapeutic applications in metabolic diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and atherosclerosis. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of lipid metabolism and inflammatory pathways. Specifically, it activates the ABCA1/LXRα/PPAR-γ signaling pathway to promote cholesterol efflux in macrophages, thereby inhibiting the formation of foam cells, which are critical in early-stage atherosclerosis.
