allo-APZ2-CVU_3 is an allogeneic cell therapy candidate developed by Rheacell, consisting of ABCB5-positive mesenchymal stem cells (ABCB5+ MSCs) derived from human dermal tissue. These cells are specifically selected using the ABCB5 (ATP-binding cassette member B5) marker, which identifies a highly pure subpopulation of dermal MSCs with potent immunomodulatory and tissue-regenerative properties. The therapeutic mechanism of action involves the modulation of the chronic inflammatory environment characteristic of chronic venous ulcers (CVUs). Upon topical application to the wound bed, the cells facilitate a phenotypic shift in local macrophages from a pro-inflammatory M1 state to an anti-inflammatory, pro-regenerative M2 state. This transition helps to resolve chronic inflammation and promotes the subsequent phases of wound healing, including tissue remodeling and closure. The product is currently in Phase 3 clinical development for the treatment of chronic venous ulcers that are resistant to standard compression therapy.
