AlloDerm is a human-derived acellular dermal matrix (ADM) that serves as a biological scaffold for soft tissue repair and reconstruction. Developed by LifeCell Corporation (now part of AbbVie), it is produced through a proprietary decellularization process that removes cells and antigenic components from donated human cadaveric dermis while preserving the structural and biochemical integrity of the extracellular matrix (ECM). This ECM consists primarily of type I collagen, elastin, and proteoglycans, which facilitate host cell infiltration, revascularization, and eventual replacement by the patient's own tissue. AlloDerm is widely utilized in breast reconstruction (particularly following mastectomy for breast cancer) to support implants or tissue expanders, as well as in abdominal wall reconstruction, hernia repair, and periodontal surgery.
