Allogeneic adipose-derived adult mesenchymal stem cells (Ad-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the Fundacion De Investigacion Biomedica De Salamanca for the treatment of inflammatory conditions, specifically severe dry eye disease associated with chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGvHD). These cells are isolated from the adipose tissue of healthy donors and expanded in vitro. They possess potent immunomodulatory properties, acting through the secretion of paracrine factors such as interleukin-10 (IL-10) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), as well as through direct cell-to-cell contact with immune cells like T-lymphocytes. In the context of dry eye, they are typically administered as an ophthalmic solution to reduce ocular surface inflammation and promote the repair of the lacrimal apparatus.
