Allogeneic adipose-derived adult mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) are a cell-based therapeutic product consisting of expanded multipotent stem cells obtained from the fat tissue of healthy donors. These cells possess potent immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties. Their mechanism of action involves the secretion of various bioactive molecules (such as indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase and prostaglandin E2) and direct interaction with immune cells, which collectively suppress the activity of activated T-lymphocytes and promote a pro-healing environment. In the treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), these cells are injected directly into the tracts of draining fistulas to reduce chronic inflammation and facilitate tissue repair. This specific therapeutic program is being developed by the Red Andaluza de Diseño y Traslación de Terapias Avanzadas and is currently in Phase I/II clinical trials for HS patients who are refractory to or on background treatment with adalimumab.
