Allogeneic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AMSCs) are an investigational biologic cell therapy being evaluated for the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy. In a Phase 1 clinical trial led by Sanjeet S. Grewal at the Mayo Clinic, these cells are delivered via a single intraparenchymal infusion directly into the anterior nucleus of the thalamus as an adjunct to standard-of-care deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. The therapeutic rationale is based on the regenerative and immunomodulatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells, which are hypothesized to release paracrine signals that repair damaged neural tissue and potentially differentiate into neural cell types, thereby modulating the aberrant electrical activity associated with seizures.
