Allogeneic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells expanded is an investigational cell therapy developed by the Fundacion Para La Investigacion Biomedica Del Hospital Universitario La Paz for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke and other inflammatory conditions. The therapy utilizes mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from the adipose tissue of healthy donors, which are expanded ex vivo to achieve therapeutic concentrations. These cells function primarily through paracrine signaling, releasing a secretome rich in immunomodulatory cytokines (such as IL-10), pro-angiogenic factors (such as VEGF), and neurotrophic factors (such as BDNF and HGF). Following intravenous administration, the cells migrate to injured tissues and modulate the local microenvironment to reduce neuroinflammation, promote angiogenesis, and support neural repair. Clinical development has progressed through Phase 2 trials for ischemic stroke (AMASCIS trial), COVID-19 pneumonia, and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
